Under -16 "A" St.John's Player - Katie Dunphy

Katie Dunphy

"A kid with a Bright Future"

When it comes to fielding a Burin Peninsula teams one doesn't have to be a genius to figure out what's up with the demise of soccer on the "Boot". Families are leaving in droves and those kids that would have been soccer stars on the Burin Peninsula are becoming stars elsewhere and in some cases I'm seeing it right here on the Avalon Peninsula.
Katie Dunphy, my niece, is the daughter of Dave and Donna Dunphy. She's excelling in the sport of soccer in St. John's. She is presently on the Provincial U-16 All-Star "A" team. Since moving to St.John's from St.Lawrence, five year's ago, Katie been involved with Newfoundland's elite soccer program. Last night after watching the Feildian's and the St.John's U-18 contest, I stayed at the KGV Pitch and watched Katie perform with the St.John's U-16 Team. The St.John's team defeated CBS by a very lopsidded score. The St.John's U-16 Girls Team are virtually unbeatable in their age category in our province. As time goes on I can see this trend continuing in all age groups. Already, we have the St.John's U-18 Boys Teams, who are minors, competing with our senior men's Challenge Cup team. This minor team, U-18, can beat any Challenge Cup team on a given day as I wittnessed this last night when the U18 team defeated the Feildians. Kathie , is coached by Dragan, who is certainly helping her development. She plays the mid-field and is very dominant player on the field. She see's the field well, great at playing her position, a great distributor of the ball and is in excellent shape. The one thing I've noticed about Katie is, she never forgot where she came from, despite wearing the red uniform, she'll always wear blue soccer boots. There's definitely a great future in soccer for Katie Dunphy with the NL Canada Games Team and at the University Level. Just rember the name "Katie Dunphy"and where you first heard it, right here on "The Blog".
