St. Lawrence Laurentians 1 Holy Cross 0 - Game Report Courtesy of the NLSA

CLinton Edwards

Clinton Edwards Performs Double Duty as he leads St.Lawrence to victory
Fans who turned out expecting a rematch of the fiasco in St. John's several weeks ago must have been disappointed as both the Laurentians and Holy Cross stuck to soccer on this wet afternoon in St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence were in control
of this match for most of the game but several counter attacks produced several good scoring chances for the visitors as well. This was a well played game where St. Lawrence, lead by their striker Mike Howlett who set up plays and worked tirelessly, created scoring chances aplenty only to be turned away but the Holy Cross defense and some good goalkeeping by Colin Doyle in the Holy Cross net. The absence of both John Douglas (stuck on the road due to a car accident) and Tristan Slaney (work) forced Clinton Edwards to play the first half in the net.
However with Douglas back in net for the second half, it was Edwards who controlled a ball from Howlett and then turned at the top of the penalty area and caught Doyle flatfooted at the 54 minute mark for the games only goal. John Hawco nearly tied the match when Douglas attempted to cut off a cross into the box but he recovered in time to make the save. At times the game was a little chippy but with several well timed cautions, the game again settled down and became a good game to watch. Jeremy Babstock, Colin Doyle and John Hawco played well for Holy Cross but it was the defending of Ryan Slaney, Marc Pittman and Paul Slaney along with the work of Howlett up front that seemed to give St. Lawrence the edge.
