Holy Cross strikes back with a 4-1 victory over Mount Pearl

Steve Delong

Holy Cross : 4 vs Mount Pearl : 1

Holy Cross, led by last seasons MVP and top goalscorer Steve Delong, defeated Mount Pearl by a  a very convincing 4-1 score. The win was Holy Cross's most complete game this year. After losing to the U-18 NL Games team on Sunday, there was no doubt Cross had a lot on their mind as they entered the game and they had a lot to prove. It was Tyler Forsey who currently leads the league  in the  goalscoring department  and the  player who was recently named  Molson Challenge Cup "Player of the Month" for May, who opened the scoring at the 14 minute mark .  The remainder of the first half  was very evenly played. Mount Pearl, who is on a youth kick this season, played very well.  But the best overall scoring opportunities came at the  28 minute mark and at 40 minutes when Steve Delong was robbed and missed on a  couple of glorious scoring opportunities.
Second half - All Holy Cross
The second half was much different. Cross came out and took control early and they quickly began to dominate. It was Steve Delong who was certainly the man of the match and he orchestrated Holy Cross's attack. Not only did he lead the team by scoring two goals, the guy was all over the field. He illustrated some fine passing , shooting and individual skills of the game. His first goal came at the 55 minute mark . Mount Pearl caught a big break at the 56 minute mark when Andrew Stanford startled his own goalie when he struck the ball and put it pass his own keeper. Stanford made up for that blunder when he scored his first goal of the season by heading the ball past the Mount Pearl keeper at the 63 minute mark. Stanford's goal allowed Holy cross to regain a two goal cushion and cruise through the remainder  of the half. Delong scored his second at the 89 minute mark as he tucked a beautiful ball into the corner of the Mount Pearl net.
