Laurentians move into 2nd place -----

Paul Slaney

St. Lawrence:2 vs Feildians : 1

After a rather horrific start to the 2014 Molson Challenge Cup season ( 0 W - 4 L - 2 T ) the St. Lawrence Laurentians returned home and defeated Mount Pearl twice last weekend and they defeated the St. John's Feildians at home on Saturday by a 2-1 score. Veteran Paul Slaney, who has been relegated and assigned, to the bench for most of this season, showed the bench brass  that he still has something to offer to his team. Slaney opened the scoring at the 24 minute mark and he was back at the 44 minute mark, to score his 2nd of the year, and put the Laurentians up for a 2-0 half time score. Newcomer, Tyler Forsey  got the lone goal for the Feildians on a bullet like strike, breaking the St. Lawrence shutout, at the 90 minute mark. It was Tylers  4th goal of the season. The victory currently puts St. Lawrence into 2nd place.

Jake Warren

Holy Cross: 1 vs  Mount Pearl : 0

At KGV Field in St. John's the 1st Place Holy Cross Crusaders narrowly squeezed by Mount Pearl by a 1-0 score. It was a rather good game with both teams having their chances. Holy Cross came out on fire and it was Jake Warren scoring his league leading goal at the 9 minute mark. Holy Cross continued to press for about 25 minutes of the first half but couldn't hit the back of the net. The remainder of the half was well played with both teams having a equal number of  chances.
The second half was a little different, Mount Pearl probably played their best soccer of the season. They ran, out hustled and totally out worked  Holy Cross but to no avail. Their system of having just one striker upfront, Justin Pickford, needed to be adjusted especially when they were carrying the play and pressing.  Both teams goalies played extremely well. Delong made several key saves in keeping the score at bay for Mount Pearl, while Holy Cross's, Thomas Pieroway was the Man of the Match. He was simply outstanding making as many as five/six huge stops.
Both teams play again today at 1 pm.
